cut out = stop working

 I get cold feet = I lose my courage

examples:

•  There 's something wrong with the car. The engine keeps cutting out.
•  If the machines cut out at the hospital, some patients will be in great danger.
• The motor of my motorcycle cut out and I had to walk home. 
• The ship's engine cut out but they were able to fix it quickly.
